Professional whitening lightens the natural shade of your teeth using a peroxide gel, either in the chair or with custom trays you wear at home. It changes nothing about the shape of your teeth, and it does not lighten crowns, veneers or fillings — which is precisely why it should be done before, not after, any cosmetic work.
What teeth whitening treatment involves
In-chair whitening gives a faster visible change; take-home trays work more gradually and are easier to top up later. Many clinics combine both. The honest framing is that whitening is a maintenance treatment: results fade with coffee, tea, red wine and smoking, and most people top up periodically. If your teeth are heavily stained from tetracycline, or the problem is really shape rather than colour, whitening on its own will disappoint you — and a clinic that says so before taking your money is one worth using for the bigger work later. Note also that if you are having veneers or crowns, any whitening needs to happen first so the new porcelain is matched to your final shade.

In-chair (power) whitening
A high-concentration gel applied by a clinician with your gums protected, in one appointment of an hour or so.

- A visible change quickly, and anyone who will not reliably wear trays for a fortnight.
- Trade-off
- The most sensitivity, and the shade rebounds slightly in the days afterwards as the teeth rehydrate. Usually the most expensive option.
Custom take-home trays
Trays made from impressions of your teeth, with a lower-concentration gel worn for a set time over one to two weeks.

- The most controllable result, and the easiest to top up in a year's time — you keep the trays.
- Trade-off
- Slower, and it only works if you actually use them.
In-chair followed by trays
The common combination: a jump-start in the chair, then trays to finish and to maintain.

Salon or over-the-counter whitening
Non-dental whitening, sold in beauty settings and online.

- Nothing we would suggest. In the UK, tooth whitening is legally restricted to dental professionals.

- Either the concentration is too low to do anything, or it is applied by someone with no way of protecting your gums or checking for decay first. The same logic applies abroad.

Before you fly
Stage 1 of 5Check-up, and honest expectations about shade
Whitening needs a healthy mouth: decay and gum disease are treated first. This is also where you find out how much lighter your teeth realistically go, and whether existing fillings at the front will stand out afterwards.

A hygienist clean first — whitening works on the tooth, not on the film over it. The starting shade is recorded against a guide so the change is measurable rather than remembered.

You keep the trays. A short top-up every so often maintains the shade far more cheaply than repeating the treatment, and it is why trays are worth having even if you start in the chair.

Whitening works on tooth surface, not on the film over it. A polish comes first, and it is often responsible for more of the visible change than people expect.

Recovery, and how long teeth whitening last
Nothing to recover from, but there are two days where what you do makes a visible difference.
- First 48 hours
- Teeth are more porous and will take up colour readily. Avoid red wine, coffee, tea, curry, tomato sauce and tobacco — the so-called white diet. It is the least glamorous advice in dentistry and the most effective.
- Sensitivity
- Short, sharp cold sensitivity is common and temporary. A sensitivity toothpaste in the days before and after helps, and the gel can be worn for shorter sessions if it bites.
- Ongoing
- Colour returns gradually with diet and smoking rather than falling off a cliff. Most people top up periodically rather than repeating a full course.
- Call someone if…
- Gums are white, sore or ulcerated after a tray session — usually too much gel, and the amount should be adjusted. Sensitivity lasting beyond a few days is worth mentioning too.
How long it lasts
There is no fixed answer, and any clinic offering one is guessing — how long it lasts is decided by what you drink and whether you smoke. Coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco are the whole story. What is worth understanding is that whitening does not stop working; the shade simply drifts back over months, which is why keeping your trays and doing an occasional short top-up is far cheaper and far less effort than starting again. And whitening never lightens crowns, veneers, composite or old fillings — so if you have visible restorations, they will look darker relative to your natural teeth as the natural teeth get lighter, which is a reason to plan the order of treatment rather than a reason to avoid whitening.
What can go wrong with teeth whitening, and what reduces it
Every item here can happen in a UK practice too. What travelling changes is how easily it gets sorted out — which is the reason this site puts a UK examination in front of a flight.
Sensitivity during and after
The commonest side effect and normally short-lived. Sensitivity toothpaste before and after, and shorter tray sessions if it is uncomfortable.
Burnt or ulcerated gums
Almost always too much gel in an ill-fitting tray. Custom trays made from impressions, and being shown how much to use, is the entire mitigation.
A patchy or disappointing result
Intrinsic staining from tetracycline or fluorosis responds poorly and unevenly. Ask before you pay what your teeth are realistically likely to do — the answer is visible on examination.
Existing fillings and crowns standing out
They do not lighten. Where you have visible restorations at the front, plan for replacing or matching them afterwards — and know that cost before you start.
Whitening after veneers rather than before
Simply the wrong order, and irreversible in effect: the porcelain was matched to your old shade. Whitening always comes first.
“Will a UK dentist touch it when I get home?”
It is the most asked question about dental treatment abroad, and the answer is more practical than most of the arguing suggests. UK dentists are not refusing work on principle. They are refusing to guarantee treatment they did not carry out and cannot identify — and on that, they are right. A dentist asked to adjust a crown needs to know what it is made of; asked to service an implant, they need the system and the part numbers.
So the thing that decides how this goes for you is paperwork, and it is settled before you fly rather than after. You leave with the materials named, the components identified, your radiographs and a written guarantee that says what is covered and for how long. Whitening is the one treatment here with nothing for a UK dentist to inherit — there is no restoration to maintain. Take your trays and the gel concentration home, and any UK practice can supply refills. Worth knowing: in the UK, whitening may legally only be carried out by dental professionals, which is a good reason to avoid salon whitening wherever you are.

When teeth whitening are not the answer
We would rather lose the enquiry than sell you the wrong treatment. Any of these can be the better call, and the UK examination is where that gets decided.
A hygienist clean and airflow polish
When the discolouration is surface staining from tea, coffee or tobacco. It costs a fraction of whitening, and for some people it is the entire answer.
Replacing old, discoloured front fillings
When it is a filling that has darkened rather than the tooth. Whitening will not touch it, and no amount of gel changes that.
Composite bonding
When the shade is a symptom of chips and worn edges rather than colour alone.
Veneers
When staining is intrinsic and severe, or shape needs changing too. The bigger, permanent option — worth trying whitening first precisely so you know whether you need it.

Does whitening work on crowns and veneers?
